Bag types: sling, backpack or duffel

Pickleball players use three main formats. None is better in the abstract; it depends on what you haul and how long you stay at the court.

  • Sling bag: a single cross-body strap and one compartment for 1-2 paddles, balls, keys and phone. Light and quick, perfect for short sessions or walking to the court.
  • Backpack: the most popular option. Holds 2-4 paddles in a dedicated sleeve plus a shoe pocket, water bottle and valuables. Splits the weight across both shoulders and keeps your hands free on a bike.
  • Duffel or tour bag: 4-6 paddles or more, a change of clothes, a towel and several bottles. Built for tournaments, clinics or the person who brings gear for the whole group. Heavy and bulky.

What to look for before buying

  • Paddle compartment: ideally separate from everything else and soft-lined, so the face does not rub against keys or buckles. If you play an elongated paddle, make sure the inside height is over about 16.5 inches (42 cm).
  • Ventilated shoe compartment: mesh or vent holes, sealed off from the main pocket. Clean clothes stay fresh and dirty soles stay away from your paddles.
  • Insulated or fleece-lined pocket: for phone and keys, or to keep a water bottle cool in the sun.
  • Fence hook: many pickleball backpacks include a hook or carabiner so you can hang the bag on the court fence instead of leaving it on wet ground. A small detail you will use every single time.
  • Ball storage: a mesh pocket or tube for a few spares, since outdoor balls eventually crack.
  • Padded back panel and tough fabric: ideally with a reinforced or water-resistant base, because the bag is going to sit on the court.

Tip: buy for the number of paddles you carry today plus one. Almost everyone ends up with a backup paddle or a loaner for a friend who wants to try.

Do padel or tennis bags work?

Yes, in most cases. Padel bags are everywhere in Europe and are becoming easier to find in the US, and they work well for pickleball: a padel racket is wider (about 10 inches, 26 cm) and slightly longer than a pickleball paddle, so the compartment has room to spare. Tennis backpacks work too, though the racket sleeve is longer than you need. Both usually offer a shoe pocket and a thermal lining. If you are curious about the two sports, see pickleball vs padel.

That is why our picks include a few well-reviewed padel bags alongside pickleball-specific ones. What does not work well is an everyday backpack with no padded sleeve: the paddle rattles around and gets scratched.

Packing and gear care

Keep each paddle in its own paddle cover, even if the bag has a paddle sleeve: you get double protection and can grab one paddle without disturbing the rest. Always put your pickleball shoes in the vented compartment and take them out when you get home. Do not leave the bag in a hot car: heat is hard on paddle cores and makes balls brittle. You will find more useful gear in our pickleball accessories section.

Common mistakes

  • Buying a sling and discovering your shoes and water bottle do not fit.
  • Hauling a giant tour bag for a two-hour session at the neighborhood courts.
  • Leaving a sweaty towel and clothes inside for days: moisture, odor and ruined grips.
  • Not checking the sleeve height against an elongated paddle.

Heads up: listings that say "holds up to 4 paddles" usually mean standard paddles without covers. With covers or elongated paddles, count one fewer.

We compare spec sheets, the official rulebook and verified reviews, but we do not physically test the products: always check dimensions and capacity on the listing before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

Is a backpack or a sling bag better for pickleball?+

A sling is lighter and handier for short sessions with one or two paddles. A backpack carries more paddles, shoes and a bottle, and spreads the weight over both shoulders, so it is the more versatile choice if you play often.

Can I use a padel or tennis bag for pickleball?+

Yes. A padel racket is wider and slightly longer than a pickleball paddle, and tennis bags are longer still, so both have plenty of room. Just check for a shoe compartment if you need one.

How many paddles fit in a pickleball backpack?+

Most hold 2 to 4. The number on the listing usually assumes standard paddles without covers; with covers or elongated paddles, count one fewer.

What is the hook on pickleball backpacks for?+

It lets you hang the bag on the court fence, so it stays off wet or dirty ground and your gear is within reach between games.
